Ashan Pillai´s teaching career started with his appointment in 2001 as Professor of Viola on the faculty of the then newly formed, Escuela Superior de Musica de Catalonia (ESMUC) in Barcelona. In 2009 he was invited to join the faculty at the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona and, more recently in 2013, he was appointed visiting Professor at the University Alfonso X in Madrid.
This vigorous activity on several fronts reflects the important pedagogical position he now occupies in Southern Europe which in a relatively short span of time has seen his students enter major orchestral and teaching positions not only in Spain but throughout the world.
He regularly gives masterclasses on an international stage which have included clases at the conservatoires and schools of Toulouse (France), Stockholm (Sweden) , Banff, Dormaine Forget (Canada), Pittsburgh (Carnegie Mellon, USA), the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, USA), Christchurch University (New Zealand) and the Conservatoires Superiors of ...
... Madrid (Atocha), Zaragoza and Oviedo (Spain). Future invitations include tours of China and New Zealand. He has also been involved in education projects in India and the country of his birth, Srilanka.
In Spain he enjoys affliations with the most prestigious and historic institutions and festivals, including those of Cervera, Llanes, Forum International (Madrid), Altermusici (Murcia) the Spanish National Youth Orchestra and the Catalonian National Youth Orchestra. He has travelled widely thanks to masterclass invitations from several pre-conservatory schools (Bilbao, Girona, Cuenca, Cartagena, Murcia, El Escorial, Getafe, Malaga, etc..).
